Slovak locals and the Ottoman Empire who invaded it and occupied it for quite some time. Bulgaria participated in the First World War fighting along with the defeated Central Powers of Austria, Germany, Hungary and Ottoman Empire.
From the early 40’s and onwards Bulgaria had become a satellite of the Soviet Union, after a communistic government was established there with the invasion of the Red Army in 1941. It remained so throughout the Cold War period.
The head of the Bulgarian Communist Party, Todor Zhivkov, ruled the country under communism for 27 years, and during his leadership the independent opposition was crushed, cultivation and industry were state-owned, and the Bulgarian Orthodox Church fell under the control of the state.
As Bulgaria was recovering from communism, it went through a period of social and economic turbulence which resulted in a severe economic and financial crisis in late 1996-early 1997. With some help from the international community, a number of actions took place and actually helped stabilizing the country’s economy and put Bulgaria on the Euro-Atlantic path.
Bulgaria officially became a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) on March 29, 2004 and expects a full membership in the European Union by the year of 2007. |
